Today’s Surprise
Some nuthatches were fussing at something in their tree – I expected a snake but saw this little creature instead. I have lived here for five years and never even heard one before!

I don’t often take pictures of the moon. When I got my current camera, I went outside, took a picture of the moon as it looked from where I was standing, then zoomed in to see what the camera could capture. It was pretty good! Although apparently I had trouble keeping it in frame and […]
The photo challenge set before us on September 20 was Spiders and Their Webs. I like to take pictures of spiders because they usually stay still long enough, and their behavior is interesting to watch. A very common and noticeable spider is the Yellow Garden Spider, Argiope aurantia. They stay in one place for weeks, […]
This is the third part of my submission for the Nature Photo Challenge #28: Wild Animals. In my first post on this topic, I explained about our two family properties in very different sections of Texas. This post will be talking about the second one, in the Hill Country of Central Texas. In many areas […]
In our travels, we have seen some iconic North American animals. You can see more animals from the Elk Refuge at my post here. It was fun to revisit old travels for this second installment for the current Nature Photo Challenge: Wild Animals. Do you have any animal photographs in your archives? There’s still time […]
This week Denzil asks us to show wild animals for his Nature Photo Challenge #28. That is a huge topic and I think this will be a three-part series! I see lots of wild animals on the two properties that belong to our family. The one where we live full time is in East Texas, […]
Oh my!!!! So cool!!!!!!
Is it a little screech owl? My aunt used to have those nesting in her yard in Boerne, she loved them. Apparently they make a cute noise!
Yes, it’s an Eastern screech owl. They do make a noise like a horse whinnying, but I have never heard one here, so I was surprised.
Beautiful captures of this little owl! Thank you for sharing.
So cute!!
How close was he to the nuthatches? Anyway, remember the movie about the Chocolate Factory? Remember the little girl who wanted everything? Well! I just want this one darling little bird! Get it for me! 🙂
He was in his own little nest – he is way too big to get into their nests, so I don’t know what they were complaining about! But I’m glad they were or I wouldn’t have seen him.
P.S. And I will hug him and kiss him and name him George.
Lol. We bought some baby ducks yesterday and that is what we were saying about them!
We were treated the other day to a barred owl sighting. And today, right on time! the rose-breasted grosbeaks are back.
Thanks for sharing your tiny owl. What a lovely surprise.
I have heard a barred owl here but not ever seen one. I did get to see a great horned owl briefly at the very beginning of January. I am envious of your grosbeaks! They have not visited me here.
That is so wonderful! What a face!
I loved how its feather “ears” were up while it was sleeping, but then flattened once it woke up. I didn’t know they could do that!
Nice shots. The owl figured lunch was being served, huh?
We have mice, rats, moles, and gophers, and all of them do some damage – but when I find them, I just can’t do anything to them, they are too cute. I know the owl would be happy to eat them, but that’s one place I could not be an enabler! He’s on his own. 🙂
