Bright Blocks for Gray Days
About five years ago, the coordinator of my quilting group was cleaning out leftovers from group projects, and I took home some of those scraps, including some tiny little nine-patches that were only three inches square.
Scrap blocks. The bright green is a little more muted in real life.
We are having one of those dull weeks, where it is humid and overcast all day long, but never storms, and I really needed to work with some bright colors. I was inspired by a layout in Tula Pink’s City Sampler, and I loved her idea of creating six-inch blocks with simple, bold graphics. I didn’t consult her actual block designs, I just started putting the scraps together in ways they fit.
Sometime in the future, I plan to put these blocks together into a crib quilt, based on Tula Pink’s layout “City Planner.” which has strips of white and gray behind the brightly colored blocks.
Someone sure had fun with color putting these small blocks together. Will you try for a color wash effect or just go random?
Tula Pink has a few layouts with the color wash effect, and they are gorgeous, but I think with these I will go random, because most of the blocks have the colors all mixed up. Color wash for the next one! Unless I get distracted by a new pattern somewhere else…:)

Thank you! I’ve been watching some shows on minimalism, and I bet I could be more productive if I got rid of some stuff, but I really want to have the fun of combining the scraps into something useful before I pass them on!
I’m with you, minimalism is for the non creative types…think of all the waste they produce and all the gems that we save…

I really love to work with bright colors best, I think, although I rarely wear them or decorate with them!

When I was little I loved playing with dolls. I even had a lovely doll bed. My grandmother made a quilt of postage stamp size pieces! I had it for years and I believe I handed it down to you (??)Have no idea where it went. I may have given it away.
I don’t think I ever saw that one, although I still have some other doll quilts made by other ancestors. Some of the pieces in these blocks are postage-stamp size — I take advantage of them when I get them, but I don’t think I will ever create pieces that small myself!
Love that little(?) book by Tula!! Those blocks will be the perfect ‘ingredient’!!! Here, the sun is struggling to show itself. Pockets of rain surround Harlingen, temp is 76F and the humidity is 96%……a bit of “pea soup” environ!!!!!! LOL! A/C is running (way too many fabric pieces to not indulge in such control!!!!). Off to do a bit of fmq………………ta…………..
Yes, hasn’t it been a weird “winter?” Thank goodness for AC although I hate running it so early in the year!
Ours will remain on as long as humidities hover around the 90% mark (the temps, early morning, are 70+ usually headed toward mid to upper 80s). Has been unusually “soupy” this year in the Valley!!!
Beautiful small blocks, love those bright colors. We too have been struggling with gray clouds; tomorrow we see a bit of sun before it goes away again!
It looks like we are going to have another yucky weekend — bad for outside work, good for quilting! 🙂

Thanks, they were fun to make! On the last three, I cheated and fused instead of pieced — I think I may do more of those.
