I love the ducks and wish we could keep some at out pond. Tried a couple years ago but living in the mountainous country side there are too many wild animals just waiting for a treat for lunch and snacks. Now we welcome the wild wood ducks and mallards that stop by now and then. Couple of years they decided our pond and marsh land was a good place to raise a family. They come back each year and we love to note when they arrive cause soon the little babies are waddling around following mom and Dad. Besides the ducks our regular visitors include; turkeys, possums, bob cats, fox, deer, woodchucks, porcupines, rabbits, owls, ravens, turkey buzzards, and of course the squirrels and chipmunks playing in the trees and our precious hummingbirds. We have a log home tucked into the mountainside and our view is amazing. Country at it’s best. That saying ‘you can take the girl out of the country but you can’t take the country out of the girl’ is so true.
I am afraid they might fall prey to predators, although we don’t have nearly the crowd of wildlife you do! Back in 2011 we were in a drought, and the foxes would just walk through my mini-flock of sheep in broad daylight without even looking around, and the coyotes came up to eat fallen pears. But once it started raining again, I stopped seeing them. We have had a few visits from wood ducks but none of them has settled here, even though we put up a proper box. I love to hear about the wilderness around your home!
