I love the pictures! Looking at the small ones I thought the feathers looked like Snickers’ tail “feathers”. Again, looking at the last pic, I thought it was tree bark with a little grasshopper like creature over on the right side. So I was surprised when I brought the pictures up to normal size.
The feathers are a close-up of goldfinch feathers. I’m not sure if the pictures come up in the same order for everyone, but for me the last picture is bumps of tree bark from a sugar hackberry tree.
Rust is just the best.

Lots of your photos would be wonderful cropped at bit, set as repeats and printed on fabric. Have you tried that in your surface design experiments?
No, but it is on my list of things to do. I own three or four surface design books and a lot of supplies, but have not ventured there yet. Thanks for the nudge in that direction!
Wow! These are amazing, in variety and visual interest–a good reminder that color, while important, isn’t the only thing to pay attention to! What is the middle image in the top row? That one fascinates me.
It is part of a tree trunk, under the bark. That tree fell over at least 10 years ago, but its biggest branch caught and propped it up. I think maybe little shoots grew up there for a while. Now it is really dead and the bark has peeled off. I really love it too!
