Two Poems for National Quilting Day
Since December I have been keeping a poetry journal, working through a book called Every Day Poetry: The 365 Day Poetry Project, by Dustin Howard. The book leads you through 72 different poetry formats with a short description of each, and a sample poem. I have kept basic journals for years, but I am really enjoying this variation, of taking my daily thoughts and making them fit a different format each time I write. It is good mental exercise before I go to sleep.
So here are two “nonets”. A nonet is a simple format with no required meter or rhyme scheme. All you have to do is start with a 9-syllable line, and then decrease the number of syllables in each line.
Fabric Bins
Fat quarters gathered by color scheme;
Hand-woven, hand-painted, hand-dyed;
Random sizes grouped by theme;
Backing bolts, extra wide.
Pre-cut jelly rolls,
Wax cloth and batiks,
Vintage blocks,
Charm packs,
Scraps!
The Project
Magazine flip, tempting pattern clip.
Fabric choosing, cutting, fusing.
Arrange, then change locations.
Swap blocks, then “lock” in place.
Stitch and sandwich, baste,
Quilt as desired,
Admire!
Trim, bind —
Cheer!

Oh, love the poetry!
Thanks, Dawn!
Very clever. Thanks.
What fabulous fun!
I love the poems! I especially love the rhymes. I’m impressed that you’re working through this book. I might try it too.
I think you would like this book! I bought one you recommended and use often, Poem Crazy, but I never got beyond the step of creating word tickets. And I always tell myself I am going to art journal, but then I don’t gather up the supplies. For this book, I don’t need anything. I have made two rules for myself — the poem has to come from my own life, and it has to be positive. I have followed through for 96 days so far.
Well done poetry.
How cool is this! I love that you have a poetry journal.
Really nice job on the poems!
Great poems! I haven’t heard of a ‘nonet’ before but am tempted to give it a try.
This is a hoot! I love it! I occasionally write haiku, but that’s my limit.
I love your nonets. That’s an interesting way to keep a journal 🙂
Came back specifically looking for you and your quilting adventures! I am always behind but never far away. Love your nonets! Another creative tie to what you love! Keep posting, friend — I’ll always come back —
Oh my goodness, has it been that long since I actually posted??? I keep thinking of posts but somehow they don’t get written. Thank you so much, Claudia, for coming by and commenting!
Awesome poems!
