Reclamation
A few months ago, I saw “Reclamation” as the title of someone’s blog post (which, sadly, I didn’t bookmark), and I thought, “That is what I want to do with all my left-over blocks — get them out of the storage tubs, reclaim them, and turn them into a finished top.”
Back in 2017, I made this top based on a design called “Paper and Plums” by Alexandra Ledgerwood, which you can read about here. This year I used some of the leftover blocks for a row on the back, and finally got it quilted.
I had even more leftover blocks, so I arranged them in a hexagon, and then used that as a center medallion.
I think this is my favorite of all the quilts I have ever made.Β I love the color palette, and I enjoyed making different borders, based on designs I had seen in books and YouTube videos.Β The border of wonky diamonds came from “Chain of Diamonds” in Amanda Jean Nyberg’s book No Scrap Left Behind, the border of floating triangles came from “Up, Up, and Away” in her book Sunday Morning Quilts, and the border of 6″ wide piano keys was inspired by Sunbeam Fabric’s Charity Quilt 4 on YouTube.
I happened to have a jelly roll of Moda Fabrics Ombre Confetti Metallic, and that made the perfect outer border. (I am linking to a shop that shows that fabric best, but I am not an affiliate.)
I am going to keep both of these, and use them for myself! π

They are both lovely quilts and such a nice way to use up leftover bits.
Thank you! It was fun to use the leftovers and I didn’t even buy *too* much new fabric to add in. π
Understandable why they are favorite finishes! They are both so bright and cheerful! It’s such a great feeling to use up those orphan blocks. Well done!
Thanks, Wendy! I thought of you and your stay-at-home round robins, and the great quilts you have made for those events!
I love the term “reclamation” when it comes to quilts.Β Β It goes right
along with Scrap Quilting!!
Well done on your “leftover quilt”.Β You were ingenious to continue the
colors from the medallion into the borders!!
Thank you, Frances, I had a lot of fun with that idea. I maybe could have lined up the transitions a little better, but it will be on a bed, not a wall, so it won’t be so noticeable. π
I’m not a quilter at all but these are stunning! The colour palette is great and I also like the riffs in the patterns in the second quilt.
Thank you, Stephanie! I had a lot of fun trying out the different designs. π
These turned out beautifully. Iβm in awe of your handywork.
Thanks, Alys, that means a lot coming from you! I remember your great handywork in the stamp-covered table and the beautiful compositions of the handmade cards you make!
Amazing quilts. Such pretty colours
Thank you, Helen!
These are beautiful. I especially love your medallion quilt. It’s interesting to see those triangle blocks displayed in such different ways π
So beautiful
That is a wonderful quilt!
Thanks, Tierney, I am very happy with it!
Ha! I saved a picture of that quilt top from 2017, intended to make a similar one. Haven’t done that yet! But I absolutely love the one you made with more leftovers. The way the yellow from the hexagon beams into the borders is terrific!
Thanks! I am so glad to inspire you for once, because I always want to make your patterns!
