Pattern Books from the 1960s
We are getting close to the end of the huge collection of pattern books I bought at an auction, and I remember this era well. I lived through it with deep disappointment because even though I was a child, I loved the styles of the New Look, and aspired to wear them myself. Even then, I thought the styles of the 60s were boxy and unflattering on everyone.
In these photos, the poses look so uncomfortable. And square necklines? Who looks good with that? No one.
Some of the hat designs require so much unnecessary yarn to be used as decoration, as in the 1950s interior designs I showed in the previous post.

1961 Crocheted Fringe Hat, designed by Hilde Fuchs. As Joanna Mack commented on an earlier post, “they have gone a loop too far!”
And then there’s this one, that requires only 53 stitches and 5 inches of knitting, and then completes the hat with lots of loose yarn tied into place.
So that is it for a quick look at the 1960s! Next up, we will look at the ’70s and ’80s to finish out the collection.

These images of these 1960s .
Thanks Anita
Oh My Goodness, I love this post! I actually had the Bernat Hat with the GIANT sequins. It was so cool!
I think you might have been the only person that could carry off that style successfully! 🙂
Those ladies in the ski pants! Can you imagine a less real laugh?
I know, it seems to me the models expressed one of two personas in these books — squeaky clean girl next door having fun, or moody smoldering type. I’m sure today’s models look just as artificial, but these poses just make me laugh every time I look at them.
Are you sure you don’t want to whip up that fringe hat, though? Hahaha. I’d take that one over the other one. I have some of these books from my grandma’s stash, and I’ve always thought it would be fun to try to make one. Many of them were crocheted clutch purses (and they were huge).
It would be fun to wear that fringe hat in public and see what happened. I bet people would let me go to the front of the line and would give me plenty of space. 🙂
There were books of crocheted clutch purses in this collection too. Those models look like movie stars! I am saving those books to use in art journals.
I was kinda thinkin’ a fun, bold variegated thread for that fringe hat? Don’t ya’ think? Something subtle. Hahaha.
Yarn – not thread!
I could mix it up and use both!
“And square necklines? Who looks good with that? No one.” LOL
Thank you for sharing this! As a sewing pattern seller these were a delight.
Thanks, Tami! I don’t know where you are located, but recently I was in a packed, dusty antique shop in Oklahoma, and I thought of you and how you would fix up some of the things there and help them find a good home!
I want the crown hat!
It would look adorable on you! You could wear it while you were teaching. 🙂
We will be expecting you to sport some of these looks now that you have all these ideas 🙂
Oh my gosh, that would be hilarious! I had hot pants and a shrink top when I was 14 but now I would prefer the sequin hat to serve as the focal point of my appearance! 🙂
