I live on the very edge of the Houston-Galveston territory for the City Nature Challenge. This bioblitz event, run by iNaturalist, is a worldwide, 4-day challenge held every year, to get people outside, looking for all the species they can find. Some of the areas that participate include Bangalore, India; Quito, Ecuador; and Melbourne, Australia! […]
This year we have had a big bloom of Texas Ragwort, and on my walks I noticed many insects visiting them. These photos were taken over about a one-month period. That is a nice long bloom time for a wildflower. They are growing in an 11-acre pasture, and one thing I noticed, was that the […]
Okay, everybody! It’s obvious that the dead plants along the edge of the pond have to be cleared out, and goodness knows that will be a workout. But we only have one week of Spring to do it in, before Summer gets here and stays for 8 months! Human participants, you are going to need […]

Yay! I did it! I followed Becky’s #WalkingSquares challenge, walked outside and took photos every day in November (except one). If I am to be honest, I will have to admit that for me, this challenge is not so much WalkingSquares, as it is StrollStopAndStareSquares. But going very slowly and pausing often, allows me to […]
Do you quilt that pattern using a machine or by hand? I don’t quilt so I’m curious.
A machine. I have done two quilts by hand and it took forever! Learning to use the machine took some time but it’s worth it – the quilting only took about 4 or 5 hours.
The stipple is beautiful! If you do machine quilt it, do you draw in the pattern first with a fabric marker or something or work freehand?
Thanks! I can’t mark it with anything, because I am on the Gulf Coast and the marking just melts away into the humidity! So with each quilt I have made, I have tried different variables to see what works best. On that quilt I used a darning foot with the feed dogs up, cotton thread on top and polyester thread in the bobbin. That combination worked pretty well so I got a smooth motion. The machine-quilting book I learned from is Quilt as Desired by Charlene C. Frable.
such happy colours, it’s lovely!
Thank you! It’s for a pregnancy assistance center in my county so I hope the recipient thinks they are happy colors too!
Beautiful!
Thanks!
