ScrapHappy June 2023 — Scrappy Progress
Back in March, I treated myself to a long session of turning blue- and cream-colored scraps into big scrappy blocks for Sharon Tucker’s “String Theory” (from the April 2017 American Patchwork and Quilting). This month I completed seven more blocks, and got the top stitched together!
If you want to see how these blocks go together, you can find more details in my March post. I have also made the blocks in red and yellow, as was the one in the magazine article, but I have not stitched those together yet.
Now I have moved on and am stitching up a set of the blocks in brown and cream. I find that turning bits and bobs into blocks is a great stress reliever! But then the steps of basting and free motion quilting (with a domestic sewing machine) increase the stress levels again, so I postpone those steps until large blocks of time are available, and I can concentrate. 🙂
ScrapHappy Day is the 15th of each month, when we celebrate the use of scraps. Drop by and see what everyone else has created with scraps of materials and time! Our hosts are Kate and Gun, the first two names listed below, and they would love for you to join us! Just let them know and they will add you to the list.

Lovely! Very striking. I like the different-sized white and blue square outlines. So much movement in this quilt.
Thanks, Andrea! I love this pattern, you can work on it mindlessly, without regard to scrap size, and then pull it all together at the end. 🙂
That makes a lovely and wonderfully light-hearted quilt, with real sparkle. Who knew that stress relief could have such pretty results!
Thanks, Kate! I like your description of “sparkle” and I will aim for that more in the next quilt!
I like this practice, of featuring scraps once a month. Can I jump on this bandwagon?
Oh, I am sure you would be a great addition to our group! Just go to talltalesfromchiconia.wordpress.com and leave Kate a comment saying that you want to join! She will add you to the list of links, and send out a reminder about the 11th of each month. 🙂
Okay, thanks.
Such fun to see another step along your route. I love blue, so this is perfect in my eyes!
Looking great! Another brilliant scrap idea!
wow! all those little blocks look like a lot of work. The small dashes of different colours makes the overall blues sing.
I love that pattern, because it looks like a lot of work, but really, you just sew a bunch of long strips together first, and then slice across them in 2 1/2 inch widths, and then stitch them around the central square. It does not require any concentration. 🙂
That is a lovely quilt. I love the colors.
What a marvelous project! I love these even more because they are homemade, a lot of love and frustration and achievement included.
I have been reading up on some textile artists that view using scraps as continuing the “life story” of the fabrics, and that is an intriguing idea to me! Your comment sums up that perspective, so thank you!
Nice quilt! And best of all, just look at all the scraps you used up 😀
Awesome scrap quilt and yes basting and other quilt finishing activities are stress inducing for me too!
This reminds me of how much I used to enjoy patchwork many years ago 🙂
I guess you had to give it up due to all your travels and photography! 🙂 Usually, I would say to someone, “oh, I hope you get back to it,” but in your case, I think you are definitely emphasizing the right areas of interest!
