A Stack of Summer Dish Towels
One of my goals for the year is to use up most of my weaving yarn. I have been weaving on and off for over 40 years, and my favorite thing to weave is dish towels. They are so sturdy and absorbent, and I get a little spark of joy when I see them hanging up in the kitchen.
I just finished a little batch. The warp is a pale blue unmercerized cotton, and for the wefts I used an assortment of cotton, cottolin, and linen.
The draft is from Malin Selander’s book Swedish Handweaving. I did another batch of towels of this same pattern back in 2017, so you can see the draft and more treadling variations in that post. And I did another batch, in 2013, with a slightly different draft here, and that post also shows all the yarn I am STILL trying to use up! 🙂
They look beautiful!
Those are amazing – they look so professional!
Thanks! You will notice I didn’t show the selvages…:)
Totally agree re nice to use and look at. Must finish my warp off, cottolin, before I have knee surgery.
Eek! I hope you have quick recovery!
Thank You.
Oh, they’re gorgeous! I’ll bet they really dry the dishes.
These are beautiful!
Thanks, Sue! They are really easy and fun to make.
These colors and weaves are stunning. I love that soft shade of blue, and I admire your skills. It’s also nice to be able to weave something that’s so practical.
Thanks, Alys! I had been weaving for a few years before I came across a booklet of handweaving drafts for towels, but ever since, they have been something I enjoy weaving and using. 🙂
That’s nice to hear.
So fresh and pretty! I’d be rather reluctant to actual dry anything with these beauties, but I know they must be beautifully efficient.
I am still using towels I wove 30 years ago, but I do admit, I tend to keep the new ones in a drawer and only pull them out when people are coming over and I don’t want the old ratty ones on view. But I do use them! 🙂
I’m using towels I bought 20 years ago, which were expensive and good quality at the time. They’re showing signs of use but thankfully aren’t too disreputable. Every so often, I feel compelled to buy a particularly pretty one, and I do wish I had the skill to create my own!
These are beautiful. I love handwoven dishtowels. They are one of the main reasons I want to learn to weave.
I hope you get to learn how!
Very nice. Can you adopt me?
Sure! If you do the dishes!
I would much rather weave the towels than use them… 🙂
Oh, they looks great! I would love to have these in my kitchen!!
Thanks! I really enjoy having some sturdy towels to use. 🙂
How nice to make something practical as well as beautiful!
These are really beautiful 🙂
