ScrapHappy March 2021
Back in December of 2020, I showed a bunch of scrappy log cabin blocks, made mostly from donated fabrics. I could not get them arranged to my satisfaction.
Based on the helpful comments there, I decided to turn them into small lap quilts, and now I have two done.
I think I am going to keep the second one, and use it for a table topper in the fall.
I also finished another lap quilt from the donated fabrics —
That one will go to the Veterans’ Administration hospital, whenever I can get back together with the woman who collects them. I have several saved up for her.
Faster than I can use up these fabrics, my friend from Dallas brings me more. Last weekend I got literally 50 pounds of scraps from her! (They have been donated to her quilting group, and they can’t keep up with them either and are spreading the wealth.) A lot of the ones she gave me earlier had already been cut into squares and strips — this new batch looks to be remnants left after scrubs were cut out. I have started cutting them into squares and strips myself and I find that very satisfying. 🙂
ScrapHappy is the fifteenth of each month, and it is a day that Kate and Gun encourage us to use up our scraps! I am so happy to be part of this group along with:

Log cabin blocks look modern and old fashioned at the same time, beautiful! Scraps multiply like rabbits. A wonderful idea for the guild to keep in the hands of a quilter who will see them into something fabulous!
I know what you mean about scraps accumulating faster than you can use them. Every time I go to the Days for Girls session on a Saturday morning, I get another gallon bag of scraps. I can’t cut fast enough to keep up! I’ve asked the local co-ordinators to see if there are other quilters in the area prepared to take on some additional work with making quilts from the scraps too, but so far, no-one’s holding up a hand. I love the blue one; I’ll always prefer blue to one with browns in it, but I also love how summery the blue one feels.
Just love these, as always… how you ever achieve all you do, I have no idea…

Yes, donated scraps take off the pressure of — “This fabric is just so beautiful, I have to do it justice somehow!” 🙂

You know, sometimes you just have to say no to fabric donations. It’s either that or be ruthless in tossing the really ugly bits. Just speaking from personal experience here.
I do think I might have to move my sewing room downstairs, because the accumulated weight of fabric upstairs may cause the house to tilt. And I have gotten rid of some of the fabric that was of bad consistency. But I just love putting this unwanted fabric into useful items!

Wonderful use of scraps!
Wow, 50 pounds of scraps is about 200 yards!! That’s a lot of quilts! Also, I love the 2 scrappy log cabins. They are on my list and I never quite get to them. This is good inspiration.
They have so much sizing in them! After I wash the finished products, they may weigh only about 35 pounds. 🙂 I will have to keep track and see how many quilts, wheelchair bags, etc. I get out of them.

Great uses for scraps! I am SO thankful nobody is giving me scraps, but it seems you are doing well with them 🙂
I just love turning them into something useful, even if the prints are not to my taste, and the patterns are basic. I was going to try to finish my WIPs this year, but now these scraps are on top of everything so they are getting the attention. 🙂
My goodness you are busy! And so creative! How do you have time to make all of these? Do you sell these? Or enter these in quilting competitions? It must keep you busy all the time. I love it.

I usually can only quilt a few hours a week — I just don’t post often so it looks like I have more accomplished than I do! 🙂
Mostly I just give them to the local VA hospital for their wheelchair patients. I get most of the materials for free, and I just love the process, not the end product. 🙂

I echo everyone’s thoughts on the extra scraps. That’s a real challenge. There’s nothing as cozy as a quilt though, and the stars look really nice (and probably complicated to sew!)
