Beautiful Diversity
I usually stay away from politics and current events in this blog, but with the events in Charlottesville, I want to directly state my opposition to the whole idea of white supremacy. I would no more want there to be only one kind of people, than I would want there to be only one kind of flower, horse, rock, tree, or planet. And the same goes for the idea of having only one kind of people “in charge.” It is beyond ridiculous, and I am so sad that we even have to think about this issue.
I made this GIF from the textiles I have around the house. It would be better if I had more textiles from around the world to truly reflect the beauty of our diversity, but for now these will serve to express my feelings.
What a beautiful way to express this! Thank you and I totally agree with you.
Thank you. I know I have work from Portugal, Iran, Mexico, and France in there, and I felt like I had to give all those craftspeople their voice! 🙂
Thanks and I totally agree with you!
You are so welcome, thanks for commenting!
That’s a beautiful and poetically meaningful work, Textile Ranger. I love it!
Good, I’m glad! I was working on it when you posted yours about your conversation with your cat, and it was heartening to me to see we were on the same page. 🙂
Quite right too.
J > White supremacy is for those who know deep down that they fall short of ‘supreme’ – and it irks them. Most of us are just happy enough to be who we are, and happy to let others be the same. And if there are differences in detail, so much the more that we have to offere each other. Imagine a world in which all bread was white, and everyone was a baker!
You are so right! True abilities and skills aren’t shown by proclamations, but by actions. You would never hear Celine Dion wasting her time – “Hey everyone, please proclaim that my singing voice is better than that Textile Ranger woman.” (Although now I am feeling very cheered by the thought that I might possibly be better than Celine Dion at telling the difference between bobbin lace and tatting, or between overshot and Jacquard woven objects. But I won’t be making any protests about that.) 🙂
I wish there were a “love” button to choose from. Thanks for sharing this with us. I know the personal expression may not come easily, but that is part of how we learn the value of others. ❤
Thanks! I know you are like me, really feeling all this trouble so deeply. I would so much rather be thinking of light-hearted topics like party plans from 1901 or something, the kind of thing I set out to write about on this blog, instead of slogging through these issues, but things have gone way too far.
I love it! I’m proud of you for thinking of this way to embrace diversity.
Thank you. There is so much I could say on this subject, but it seemed best to “say it with textiles!” 🙂
A big happy wave from over here, on the other side of the continent. We can all live together, with harmony. That is my fervent wish. Lovely post.
That is a lovely wish and I am happy we share it!
Amen. As with quilts, a nation of all one color would be very boring.
What a beautiful tribute to diversity, heartfelt and written and ‘created from the heart’… As part of a multicultural family, I can never understand bigotry or racism.. thankfully, neither can my children or grandchildren!
Thanks, Chris! It is so encouraging to see how many people share these sentiments!
I have included your blog in INTERESTING BLOGS in FRIDAY FOSSICKING at

Thank you, Chris
Thank you so much!
Thank you for beautiful your post. It’s heartening to hear (and read) the voices to tolerance and love amidst all the negativity. Makes one believe that a better world is possible.
Oops. Apologies for the typo!
Thank you! For me too, that is a positive thing coming out of all the bad news, seeing that people will join together to stand against intolerance!
This is a really lovely way to illustrate the excellent diversity in the human condition – like your other commentators, I agree wholeheartedly with you!
Great post, great points! I think when a person rarely discusses politics it makes their occasional discussion of it that much more powerful–what a crazy place we are in these days . . . BTW–I love your new photo on your avatar!
Thanks! My old one was about 8 years old, I think. I thought it was time to reflect current reality. (insert icon for rueful, slightly chubbier face here.)
