Scrappy Baby Quilt Tops
Months ago, I saw this baby quilt on KatyQuilts, and I just loved it.

Baby quilt from KatyQuilts, used by permission.
I loved the inclusion of gray and black into a baby quilt, and the way the colors sometimes moved from one row to the next.
She has also made this quilt in larger sizes, once in gray and “boy” colors, and once in bright turquoise and batik. And Sarah at Confessions of a Fabric Addict has also made it with blue as the unifying color. I love them all.
I had plenty of scraps so I started piecing. Katy used charm pack squares cut in half, giving her rectangles of 2 1/2 inches by 5 inches. I used long strips and cut them the width of my ruler, so my rectangles ended up at 2 1/2 inches by 6 inches.
Now I have made three tops, with blocks for one more. I just now noticed that Katy added solid white borders all around; I will probably do that for at least one of the quilts.
The quilting will have to wait for a while, as I have a top secret baby project to work on next.
I just love your vibrant non pastel colors for these baby quilts. Carrying the color over to the next row is a clever idea, and you show how you just can’t go wrong with the color choice. As a bonus, this looks like it goes together quickly.
I may never find someone who is thinking of these palettes for their nursery, but the combinations did come together quickly! 🙂
I especially like the ones with purples and blues. I’m glad to see the randomly placed colors look just as good as the intentionally placed ones. This is a really good idea for a cheery, easy quilt. Thanks for sharing.
That is the addictive part of quilting for me, mixing up the colors. I was thinking about how carefully I would have to work to get the lovely precise blocks and borders you have in your most recent baby quilt — I think you have considered how to achieve that so well and so efficiently, that it is now second nature to you. I may get there one day, but for now I am happy just scrambling up scraps for the quick and easy! 🙂
How many hours do you have in a day? I have only 24 and quite a lot of that is spent sleeping. You seem to have at least 30 and most of them wide awake. Or maybe it’s that fresh country air that keeps you so busy.Love to see your work.
Well, I have been working on these for a few weeks while we had rainy days. I just waited til they were together to post them. Glad you like them!
They’re all gorgeous but the purples and blues are my favourites. It’s a great design for chain piecing.
Thank you for your kind words, and you are right about the chain piecing — it is so much fun to just sit at the machine and go to town. I feel like I am accomplishing so much in so little time! 🙂
So simple but so beautiful! Good for you!
Mary, the gray floral piece you sent me supplied some of the grays in the spring-colored quilt, and more of it is in the blocks I have for the next quilt!
What a fun baby quilt! I am all for COLOURS for babies……..NO pink and blue……….but that is just me 🙂
My daughter is having a baby in May, and has requested very pale tan and gray! And the quilt store owner near me says she is not the only one, she has heard of a few other moms going with the same combination! My daughter said, “I like all those pale neutrals you used to wear,” and I said, “But the BABIES like color!” 🙂 So I am thinking the pale one to decorate the nursery, and a bright one to stow in the diaper bag, and we will see which one the baby likes best. 🙂
